New Bill Would Open Up Home Modification Opportunities for Seniors

As an estimated 10,000 baby boomers are expected to retire per day for the next two decades, there will be an unprecedented amount of seniors (60+) wanting to stay in the comfort of their own homes. In order to do that safely and prevent debilitating falls, homes will need to be modified in order for many boomers to maintain their independence.

A new bill introduced in Congress – H.R. 1780, Senior Accessible Housing Act – would give seniors the financial ability to make a number of qualifying modifications to the home by way of a $30,000 tax credit.

The credit would apply to:

• The installation of entrance and exit ramps
• The widening of doorways
• The installation of handrails or grab bars
• The installation of non-slip flooring
• Other modifications that the IRS includes on a list of modifications that would enhance the ability of the individuals to remain living safely, independently, and comfortably in their residences

“This bill allows seniors the resources to remain in their homes with an added layer of safety modifications to keep them out of the hospital or from moving into a nursing home,” says Jim Greatorex, vice president of Accessible Home Improvement of America (AHIA). “Providers have a real opportunity to provide these services to seniors in the community as AHIA and VGM work with members to gain support in Congress for this legislation.”

Home modifications can range from $100 to over $25,000, which places a large financial burden on seniors and their families who wish to maintain their independence. There are many states and communities that have no low interest loans specifically for home modifications. This proposed tax credit would be a great addition at the federal level for seniors across America to take advantage of this resource.
